Artificial Intelligence in Oral Radiology

The term Artificial Intelligence (AI) is trending worldwide and algorithms based on AI become a part of our daily lives. It is difficult to imagine that dentistry would be devoid of AI applications and keep on developing with the steady pace as before the onset of increased use of AI in medicine. Quick database search using terms AI and medicine produced over 70 000 results, while limiting the search to dentistry – 3000 results. Among these applications it is oral radiology that was one of the first fields in which machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) as subsets of AI were introduced. Therefore the aim of the lecture is to present the core applications of AI in oral radiology. There will be discussed AI-based solutions in numbering of teeth, image segmentation and identification of lesions in radiographs, Cone-Beam CT scans as well as other imaging modalities. Information on application on AI in teaching of oral radiology will also be presented.
