Artificial Intelligence or Augmented Intelligence Applications in Dental Radiology

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be defined as computers that imitate the cognitive functions of humans has the capacity to learn, solve problems and perform tasks that require human intelligence. Augmented Intelligence (AUI) is a human-centered partnership model of human and AI working together to increase cognitive performance, including learning, decision-making, and new experiences. As in all areas of our life, AI or AUI applications are becoming widespread day by day in the field of Medicine. Especially, the evaluation of medical images with AI or AUI applications based on Deep Learning (DL) algorithms stands out as a popular research area in the field of Medicine. In parallel with these developments in the field of Medical Imaging, efforts to evaluate radiographs with AI and develop algorithms that can support physicians as Decision Support Mechanisms have intensified in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Many studies evaluating teeth, restorations, dental and jaw pathologies such as caries, periodontal disease, and cyst-tumor in 2 and 3-dimensional dental radiographs have been included in the literature. In this lecture, the definition and classification of AI and AUI and their applications in dental radiology will be mentioned and a future perspective on AI or AUI applications in dentistry will be presented.
